What is Planell Oil?
Planell oil is a proprietary name from Arch Chemicals for olive oil unsaponifiables (Olea europaea). The name is a conjunction of the words "plant", "cell" and "oil". Planell is a lightweight oil that is extremely stable and may be stored in a cool, dry place for extended periods. Planell oil is often cited as a substitute for animal squalene oil.
Planell oil contains both squalane and squalene, building blocks in the production of lipids. They are very important in maintaining good skin health and a youthful appearance. Both squalane and squalene interact with glycolipids present in the skin. They help maintain skin's barrier properties and flexibility and help maintain suppleness.
Other key components of olive oil unsaponifiables include phytosterols. These act in a manner similar to lanolin.
Planell oil is a vegan product prepared by selectively refining unsaponifiable fractions left after pressing the olives. Planell contains a variety of compounds, as shown in the following chart.

Each of these compounds plays a vital role in skin health. Vegetable or animal squalane does not prove this full spectrum of key skin health components.
Planell oil is soluble in oils and water. It forms an emulsion in water, making it very easy to incorporate into existing or new lotion formulations. High water content emulsions may separate into a floating mousse. Simply shake to redistribute the emulsion.
Planell oil may be used in a wide variety of applications. It may be easily substituted for other oils in many formulations by direct replacement of these oils. Be sure to maintain the same amounts of oils to ensure success. Planell may be applied directly to the skin, but use in lotions and serums is much more common.
Typical use rates in lotions, eye creams and lip balm is 0.5% to 5%. Kiehl's sells a lotion that is based in squalane. While such lotions are very effective in helping dry skin conditions, they are extremely expensive.
Hair care products typically use 2-5%, although higher amounts may be used for some hair types.
Planell may also be added to carbomer gels.Typical use rate in this application is1-3%. Add the Planell oil to the mixture after the carbomer is fully hydrated.
In water-based solutions such as lotions, Planell oil is compatible with all types of commercial preservatives. In all oil applications, no preservative is required. You may chose to utilize an anti-oxidant such as Vitamin E, to provide greater stability and prevent oxidation.
