Fresh from the French Polynesian island of Tahiti comes our Huile de Coco Vierge (virgin coconut oil or creme). This oil is prepared from sun-dried coprah (the inside of the coconut fruit), extracted by cold pressure. It has the natural scent of fresh coconuts. It does not have a heavy, sweet "fragrance." Excellent as a massage oil, or for lotions and creams.
Virgin Coco Lip Creme

Coconut Ambrosia
If you use real fruit distillates in this lotion, you won't need much essential oil or fragrance. Adjust water phase if you want a thinner result.
All measures by weight, except water.
Water Phase
deonized or purified water, hydrosol, distillate or tea
(I used a guava, cantaloupe and watermelon distillates) - 3 oz.
Oil Phase
apricot kernel oil - 1/2 oz.
virgin coconut oil - 1/2 oz.
shea butter - 1 teaspoon
emulsifying wax NF - 1/4 oz.
Phenonip - 14 drops
Additives Phase
essential oil or fragrance oils, up to 1.5%.
Process
Warm the liquid to approx 90F.
Melt oil phase to fluidity. Stir to ensure proper dispersion of oils. While agitating oil phase, add liquid slowly. An emulsion will form. Continue stirring for 5 minutes by hand or until just mixed, if using a stick blender or other mechanical mixer.
Blend additives phase in and stir again. Continue stirring until your product is light and fluffy.
Make approx. 4 - 5 oz.

Tahitian Lip & Body Treat
Tamanu oil adds a distinctive flavor to this lip treat. Use 1 oz. glass jars. This is not the "stiffest" lip balm, and won't do well in tubes.
Ingredients:
candelilla wax - 12 grams
avocado butter - 6 grams
shea butter - 6 grams
mango butter - 6 grams
evening primrose oil - 6 grams
tamanu oil - 3 grams
castor oil - 5 grams
jojoba oil (wax) - 7 grams
optional - 1/4 teaspoon flavor oil - I used chocolate.
Melt the waxes in a sterile microwave safe bowl for 2 minutes at 50% power. Keep heating in short bursts til waxes are completely melted together. Stir. Add mango butter, oils. Reheat for a short time (about 30 seconds or so at 50% power) til all is melted together. Stir. Pour, while hot, into waiting lip balm tins. Cool thoroughly before using. Makes approximately 3 oz. of product.
| HINT: If you're making a lotion or other body care product with tamanu, I'd suggest holding it to under 5% of the total weight. I'd also suggest a mint or cinnamon, clove, any citrus oil, or anything like rosewood, ylang, patchouli, vetiver or black pepper, coriander or cardamom as good scent matches for tamanu. I haven't tried it with the florals only because it doesn't seem to equate very well, scentwise. |
