Make your own sensual body powders at home
Making body powders is simple, quick and fun. You only need a few ingredients and you're on your way. Our formulas are all-vegetable, and in general, do not require the addition of a preservative.
MOISTURIZING BODY POWDER
This recipe combines Natrasorb-100 with SkinFlow-100 to create a moisturizing body powder.
¼ cup Natrasorb-100
¾ - 2 cups Skinflow-100
2 teaspoons wheat germ oil or sunflower seed expeller oil
.2% methylparaben (optional)
Fragrance, qs (not more than 3% of batch weight)
PROCESS:
In a sterile bowl, mix the oils into the Natrasorb using sterile tools. Mix til all is free-flowing. Add the Skinflow as desired and mix
thoroughly with a sterile fork. Final mixing is accomplished with sifting.
Put a wide powder funnel over your containers and sift directly into them.
HINT: Moveable Feast!
Why not make an edible massage oil to go along with that edible body powder? Bon Appetit! |
Arrowroot Body Powder Base
Arrowroot is a powder made from the root of the plant Marantha arundinacea. Arrowroot looks and feels like cornstarch and has no flavor. You can make a simple body powder by mixing 1 part Arrowroot powder to up to 8 parts corn starch.
Another splendid dusting powder blend is made from 2 parts arrowroot, and a combination of 1 part Skinflow and 1 part Natrasorb.
You may add essential or fragrance oils to these powder mixes. Once the powders are blended and still in the mixing bowl, add your fragrancing materials to the top of the powder using a dropper. Mix gently with gloved hands. Transfer into a sieve or flour sifter. Run through the sieve or sifter until no lumps remain.

Silky Liquid Body Powder
(makes about 1/3 cup)
All the benefits of a loose powder without the puff and dust! Since this formula contains water, be sure to add the preservative.
Oil Phase
1 teaspoon glyceryl monostearate
1 teaspoon jojoba oil
2 teaspoon wheat germ oil
2 Tablespoons fractionated coconut oil
Fragrance, as desired
Water Phase
5 teaspoons Natrasorb-100
2 tablespoons distilled water
1 teaspoon polysorbate 20
.2% methylparaben (about a scant scant pinch)
Process
Mix oil phase together at approx. 140F. Set aside. Warm distilled water to 140F. Dissolve polysorbate 20 and methylparaben in the water. Distribute Natrasorb slowly over the top of the water mix. Incorporate to create a slurry. Using a sterile fork, slowly combine water and oil phases. Mix until emulsion forms and thickens. Package immediately in sterile containers.
Basic Body Powder Base
Excellent base for fragrance, essential and fixed oil and powder blends.
2 parts Natrasorb-100
1 part SkinFlow-100
.2% methylparaben (optional)
Note: a part can be any measure you wish. Be sure to make the recipe
accordingly proportionate.
Mix the ingredients in a sterilized (dishwasher) stainless steel bowl using sterile utensils or a gloved hand. Sifters work very well for this task, too. Store airtight in a cool, dry place.
Add up to 3% in essential or fragance oils or blends. You may also add up to 3% in fixed oils. Fractionated
coconut oil, grapeseed and hazelnut oils works very well in this application. |
Edible Dusting Powder Base
Yum Yum! Move over, Kama Sutra! Dim the lights and whip out those feather dusters...
1 part Natrasorb-100
1 part SkinFlow-100
1/2 part corn starch (optional)
1/2 part tapioca starch or flour (optional)
1/32 to 1/16 part honey powder, to your taste (optional) - you can find this at most health food store and food co-ops. Look for HoneySweet brand.
1/32 to 1/16 part buttermilk powder, to your taste (optional)
.2% methylparaben, (optional)
Note: a part can be any measure you wish. Be sure to make the recipe accordingly proportionate.
Mix the ingredients in a sterilized (dishwasher) stainless steel bowl using sterile utensils or a gloved hand. Sifters work very well for this task, too. Store airtight in a cool, dry place.
Add more honey powder for a Bit 'o' Honey taste, or any flavor oil you desire. For an interesting twist, add a 3-5% of flavored liqueur to the base. It will be absorbed completely, and only the taste of the liqueur will remain. We tried Irish Cream and loved it. Midori or Amaretto are nice as Valentine's Day treats!
Here are some notes from our test lab to get you started.
Trader Joe's Cookbook Vanilla (alcohol free)
contains vanilla bean extractives, glycerin, sugar, xanthan gum and water: Added about 1 teaspoon in 1/2 oz skinflow. This needs sweetening, like powdered honey or some other form of powdered sweetener -- vanilla powder will be good, or the teeniest pinch of stevia. I did not have either on hand, so used about 2 teaspoons
powdered (confectioners) sugar. This was delicious. Like a dessert.
Thank you, Trader Joe : )
Snowdrift Farm flavor oils:
40 drops flavor oil (about 1/2 teaspoon)
1/2 oz. Skinflow
2 teaspoons powdered sugar.
Very nice.
DeKupyer's Butter Shot Liqueur: 1 - 1.5 teaspoons per 1/2 oz. of Skinflow. You can smell this one coming!
Hiram Walker's Peppermint Schnapps: 2.5 - 3 teaspoons per 1/2 oz. Skinflow
For equipment, we used a mixing bowl and sifter, and various measuring cups, spoons and droppers. We packed the experimental 1/2 oz. batches into 4 oz. polypro jars afterwards. A half ounce of Skinflow takes up a lot of space.
To get the mix to become a very fine, light powder, you will need to sift and
re-sift through a flour sifter numerous times. It is best to allow the mix to first dry out completely, and then sift. Allow to dry for several minutes between each sifting.
You may wish to make a complimentary edible massage oil to go with your delicious body powder. Just add flavor oil at 3-5% of your batch weight and a little bit of glycerin (to taste). |
