Cocoa Butter Lotion
Here is my basic recipe:
OIL PHASE
1.5 oz. e-wax NF
3 oz. cocoa butter (I used natural for the chocolate scent)
2 oz. jojoba oil
1 oz. fractionated coconut oil
WATER PHASE
1 oz. vegetable glycerin
16 oz. distilled water
1 teaspoon Cosmocil CQ (preservative)
FRAGRANCE (optional)
1 teaspoon fragrance oil or essential oil blend.
METHOD
Heat the oil phase in a double boiler or microwave oven until
melted. In the microwave, this is best done is short bursts of heat,
under 30 seconds each, then stirring and heating again.
Heat the water phase to about 100F and pour into a sterile bowl.
Begin agitating with a stick blender. Slowly drizzle the melted oils
into the agitating water. An emulsion will occur. Add fragrance, if
using, and agitate for at least 3 minutes to ensure a good emulsion.
Pour into sterile containers. Lotion will thicken upon cooling and
standing.
Upon Bill's advice, I substituted the Cosmocil and 15% of the water
with Perfumer's alcohol, which also contains isopropyl myristate, (a
synthetic light oil used in a lot of personal care products on the
market today.) Bill's premise is that the alcohol will preserve the
lotion, thus making the use of a preservative unnecessary. We tested this with a Chek-it kit, and both the Cosmocil CQ and alcohol preserved lotions tested non-detect.
Here is the Cocoa Butter Lotion No. 2 (with alcohol)
OIL PHASE
1.5 oz. e-wax NF
3 oz. cocoa butter (I used natural for the chocolate scent)
2 oz. jojoba oil
1 oz. fractionated coconut oil
WATER PHASE
1 oz. vegetable glycerin
11 oz. distilled water
5 oz. Perfumer's Alcohol
...same fragrance and method as the first recipe, above.
I can tell you that I really like the feel of the alcohol version
over the no-alcohol version. It's smoother and easier to
apply than the all-water version. I think I might add a bit of
Natrasorb in the next batch, though, as the cocoa butter really is a
bit much to absorb into the skin all at once. I tend to slather on lotions,
though.
I used Satsuma fragrance oil in the first (no alcohol) version of
the lotion. It really complements the cocoa butter odor nicely and
has a very similar scent to my Chocolate Mandarin Truffle Soap. In
the second batch, I used Coco Mango fragrance oil. I love this
combination! Smells just like the beach.
Easy Adjustable Luxury Lotion
This is a simple lotion which is made using emulsifying wax NF. You may substitute any of the oils in this lotion to tailor it to your needs. All measures by volume, unless otherwise specified.
Oil Phase ·
Emulsifying Wax NF 0.4 oz.
Fractionated Coconut oil 1 oz.
Apricot kernel oil 1.4 oz.
Glycerine 0.9 oz.
Phenonip 1/16 tsp
Essential oils or fragrance, to your taste (optional)
Water Phase ·
Distilled water or distillate, 4.7 oz. (You may also use your own homemade flower water, following these instructions.)
1/16 tsp silk protein
Natrasorb 100 1 oz.
Melt the oil phase components and combine well. Allow to cool to about 150 F. Warm the water to 150 F. Add the oil phase to the water and mix well. Once the two phases are mixed add the Natrasorb and mix well. Do not be concerned if the lotion is not thick. Dispense immediately as the lotion thickens on standing. |
Desert Oasis Lotion Butter
Take this with you on the road, to the beach, at the park, or anywhere you'll need a little extra moisture and nourishment for your skin. We've added Natrasorb as a "de-greaser" -- so your lotion bars aren't too slippery to handle. Totally vegan.
1 part aloe butter
1 - 1/2 parts shea and/or mango butter
2 parts avocado and/or sweet almond oil
1/2 part carnauba wax
1/3 part Natrasorb
1-3% essential or fragrance oil
Measure and mix everything except the Natrasorb into a sterile stainless heating vessel. Place in a bain marie or double boiler and heat to melting. Add Natrasorb and stir with a wire whisk (don't use the stick blender, unless you wish to spend a long time cleaning it!). Pour into waiting molds. Freeze to release.
La Dolce Vita
This is a water in oil emulsion using polysorbate 20 with GMS to make a stable emulsion. Fractionated coconut oil is used to allow the nutritive oils to absorb quickly to avoid a greasy feel.
Oil Phase
Macadamia Nut oil 15 g
Wheat germ oil 5g
Shea Butter 20 g
Fractionated Coconut 5 g
Glyceryl monostearate 2g
Polysorbate 20 - 3g
Essential oils or fragrance, to your taste (optional)
Water Phase
Distilled water or distillate 50 mL. (You may also use your own homemade flower water, following these instructions.)
Wheat gel up to 2.5 g
Aloe powder 99 x 0.5 g Potassium sorbate, as a preservative 0.1 g
Prepare the water phase first. Warm the water to 80 degrees F. Dissolve the potassium sorbate and aloe powder in the water first. Add the Wheat gel as required. Warm the oils gently and place in a blender or use a stick blender. While the oils are being mixed, slowly add the water phase. Mix thoroughly and bottle in sterile containers. Remember to experiment before committing large amounts of oils. |
