Formulas for Lip Balms

make lip balm at home!

Hemp-Cocoa Butter Lip Lube

High in EFAs and anti-oxidants. For how-to on oil infusions, please click here.

3 oz beeswax pastilles
2 oz cocoa butter
3 oz shea butter
2 oz. hemp seed oil
2 oz. jojoba oil infused with lavender buds
1-2 teaspoons flavor oil (optional)
3/4 teaspoon nat vitamin E

Melt wax, butter and oil in a doubleboiler, or in short bursts in the microwave. Allow to cool slightly, then
add flavor oil and Vit E and pour into clean containers.

Hint: To fill lip balm tubes, you can rubber band several together and stand them upright on the countertop. This will serve to stabilize them. Once upright, they are ready to fill.

Or, do what Terry at A Candlelover's Dreams does: insert them into floral foam. It's fairly squishy stuff and you can re-use the foam holder, too.

Pour your heated lip balm mix into a sterile ketchup or mustard dispenser (available at most discount department stores for about $1) and cap. Carefully squeeze mix into upright tubes just shy of the top. Allow to stand til solid. Unband, cap and label.

- from the combined wisdom of several 1Natural listmembers.

Kukui Lip Treat

Kukui nut oil provides EFAs and other nutrients to promote healing. Great for use after-sun.

White beeswax.....6 grams
mango butter..... 11 grams
kukui nut oil .....31 grams
shea butter.....6 grams
glycerin USP.....25 drops
5 drops Vitamin E, natural
flavor oil (optional).....30 drops

Process:

Melt the waxes in a sterile microwave safe bowl for 2 minutes at 50% power. Keep heating in short
bursts til waxes are completely melted together. Stir. Add mango and shea butters, kukui nut oil and glycerin. Reheat for a short time (about 30 seconds or so at 50% power) til all is melted together. Stir. Add Vitamin E and flavor oil, if using. Stir again. Pour while hot into waiting lip balm tins, tubs, pots or tubes. Cool thoroughly before using. Makes approximately 3 oz. of product.

Hint: If you're making a lotion or other body care product with tamanu, hold it to under 5% of the total weight. Flavor with a strong, complimentary chocolate, vanilla, mint or cinnamon, clove, any citrus oil, or anything like rosewood, ylang, patchouli, vetiver or black pepper, coriander or cardamom. These are good scent matches for tamanu.

Hot Buttered Cappucino Lip Balm

We used Sweet Chocolate flavor oil in this recipe, but you can substitute any flavor oil that's compatible with coffee -- or use none at all.

1 1/3 oz. carnauba wax
2 3/4 oz. coffee butter
4 1/3 oz. apricot kernel oil, other other light oil
1/8 oz. flavor oil (optional)

Using indirect heat, such as a double boiler, melt the wax, butter and oil together. Stir in flavor oil and pour into tubes or pots. Allow to cool before capping.

Orange-Mango Lip Butter

4 tspns infused olive oil
1 tspn beeswax pastilles
2 tspns mango butter
10 drops 5-fold orange essential oil, or to taste
20 drops Vitamin E, natural

Melt wax, butter and oil in a doubleboiler, allow to cool slightly, then add essential oil and Vit E and pour into clean containers.

South of the Border Lip Balm

Rich and moisturizing, this lip balm uses oils and waxes from plants found mostly in the Sonoran Desert and South America.

White or yellow beeswax, 3 grams
carnauba wax, 1 gram
candelilla wax, 2 grams
jojoba oil, 8 grams
sweet almond oil, 25 grams

shea butter, 4 grams
glycerin USP, 25 drops
vitamin E natural, 1 gram
flavor oil (optional), 30 drops

Process:

Melt the waxes in a sterile microwave safe bowl for 2 minutes at 50% power. Keep heating in short bursts til waxes are completely melted together. Stir. Add jojoba, sweet almond oil and glycerin. Reheat for a short time (about 30 seconds or so at 50% power) til all is melted together. Stir. Add Vitamin E and flavor oil, if using. Stir again. Pour, while hot, into waiting lip balm pots or tubes. Cool thoroughly before using. Makes approximately 3 oz. of product.
