All About Karanja and Neem Oils

Karanja Oil

The oil derived from the Karanja or Pongam tree (Pongamia glabra) has incredible insecticidal qualities.

A truly useful plant, the beautiful karanja has been valued for many centuries in its native India. Now grown widely throughout the Indian subcontinent, it is also found in Australia, Florida, Viet Nam, Hawaii, Malaysia, Oceania, Philippines, and Seychelles. Remarkably adaptable, this tree can grow in a variety of ecologies, and can even tolerate limestone and rooting in salt water.

Karanja oil is cold pressed from seeds. The oil is reddish brown and rather viscous and non-edible. What makes the karanja oil so valuable, though, is its insecticidal and antiseptic qualities. In Ayurvedic and folk medicines the oil is used the oil for biliousness, eye ailments, itch, leucoderma, rheumatism, skin diseases, worms, and wounds.

We recommend using karanja oil mixed with neem oil to treat mange in pets. Mix 1-2 ounces into a shampoo or lotion base to treat. In formulation, use up to 10%. The scent can be covered using fragrance or essential oils.

Neem Oil

Neem oil (Azadirachta indica) is reported to remove toxins, purify blood and prevent damage caused by free radicals in the body.

The medicinal properties of neem exhibit antibacterial, antipyretic, antimalarial, antitumor, antiulcer, antidiabetic, and antifertility effects, as well as positive effects on the central nervous and cardiovascular systems.

The insecticidal qualities of neem oil are well known. The main active ingredient in neem is azadirachtin. It is responsible for repelling as well as limiting the pupation and reproductive abilities of many insects.

Snowdrift Farm's neem oil is cold pressed from the kernels of the neem fruit.

Mange and Scabies Treatment Salve

Rub a small amount of this soothing salve onto affected areas. Increase amount of shea oil for a thinner product. Fine for use on people and pets.

1 oz. carnauba wax

2 oz. Olive butter or coconut 76 degree oil

3 oz. Shea oil

1 oz. karanja or neem oil or use 1/2 oz. each oil

1/4 oz. dimethicone

20 drops tea tree oil and 30 drops lemon oil

Combine the first 5 ingredients and melt. Add the fragrance to the melted mixture. Test your salve by allowing drops to cool on a plate or spoon. Adjust the hardness using wax or oil depending upon whether you want it harder or softer. Ensure
that the melt is between 170 and 185 F before pouring to
prevent graininess. Pour into wide mouth containers. This recipe is not suitable for stick packaging, but it can be modified to produce stick products. The amount of shea oil will need to be reduced for stick applications. You will need to determine the exact amount for your product by experimentation.

Cool quickly to prevent crystal formation.

Insecticidal Lotion

Oil Phase

2 oz. Apricot kernel oil (AKO)

1/4 teaspoon Phenonip

1/4 teaspoon Cyclomethicone

1/4 oz. karanja or neem oil

1 ounce Emulsifying wax NF

Scent - optional up to 10 ml

Water Phase

7-9 ounces distilled water

2 g Lactic acid

Combine the AKO, karanja or neem, Phenonip and the cyclomethicone and mix well. Add the emulsifying wax and heat until melted. Use a microwave in short bursts at half power or a double boiler. The oil phase should be warm enough to ensure that it does not solidify when added to the water. Combine the ingredients in the water phase while the oil phase is melting. The water phase should be warmed to
around 110 to 120 F before starting the lotion. Add the
oil phase to the water phase slowly while processing using a stick blender. Blend for several minutes. Add fragrance and blend well. A stick blender is required to ensure that a good emulsion is made. Hand blending techniques do not provide enough mixing to ensure that the emulsion will not separate.

Pour into bottles while hot. The lotion will thicken as
it cools. Allow 72 hours for the lotion to thicken completely.

Massage Oil for Mange and Mites

The perfect Ayurvedic treatment for pets and humans, when pests have ravaged the skin and/or fur.

Combine 1/2 ounce neem oil with 1/2 ounce karanja oil. Whisk in 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder to make a paste. You need not add the turmeric powder, but it will facilitate healing. Bear in mind the turmeric is a dye and will stain.

Dilute the oil with up to 6 ounces of fixed oil. We recommend a combination of jojoba and sweet almond oil for their compatibility with fur and skin. Use more oil for smaller animals and people, less oil for larger. Apply gently to affected areas. Repeat 2-3 times daily. Wash off with a natural shaampoo. Repeat as needed until skin is healed and fur has regrown.
