Add emollients and humectants to your body care products to enhance their moisturizing qualities.

What are emollients and humectants?

Emollients are ingredients that soften and soothe the skin. They may be naturally occuring, such as fixed oils and glycerin, or they made be man made, such as silicone oils or isopropyl myristate. Their moisturizing qualities are provided by the chemical composition of the material itself.

Generally, emollients are added to such products as creams and lotions to provide extra moisturization or to help relax fine lines and wrinkles.

Humectants also soften and soothe the skin. They are usually derived from vegetable oils, but can be man made. Humectants derive their moisturizing abilities from water which they pull from the nearest available source. Have you ever noticed how glycerin soaps develop moisture droplets on the surface when left in a humid place?

Lactic Acid - 88%, FCC

INCI: Lactic Acid

Rich with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and reputed to promote smooth, fresh looking skin, lactic acid may be added to lotions and serums at no more than 10% of the total batch weight. Do not use in direct sunlight. Use a sunscreen when in the sun. Please read the FDA's "Guidance for Industry: Labeling for Topically Applied Cosmetic Products Containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids as Ingredients" before formulating with this ingredient.

Sodium Lactate 60% solution

INCI: Sodium Lactate 60% solution Liquid form.

Sodium salt of lactic acid. When used in cold process soaps, provides hardness. May be used as an emollient in lotions at less than 5% of the batch weight.

SDF Hydra 1% is supplied as a 1% water solution. Due to its natural skin-like properties, excellent water retentive capacity and high viscoelasticity, it is highly recommended for skin products, such as creams, sprays, emulsions, lipsticks, etc. The recommended usage for skin care products is 0.25 to 2%. A water-white liquid wax which readily penetrates the skin. A must-have on any lotionmaker's shelf. Greatly improves the after-feel of lotions. Use rate is 5-10%.
