A member of the Lamiaceae family, the basil essential oil we sell at Snowdrift Farm is also known as French or Sweet Basil. The entire plant is highly aromatic, though only flowering tops are used for our steam distilled oil.
Basil essential oil smells somewhere between green and sweetly-spicy. It has a pleasant odor and blends well with other green notes such as marjoram, clary sage, geranium, oakmoss. It also blends well with florals and citrus notes.
Basil may be classed as a thermogenic herb, meaning it can feel hot or cold to the touch. It is best used in small amounts -- less than 1% in skin care application. Do not use during pregnancy. |
